Florida is no stranger to political chaos, wild headlines, and protests, but on February 5, 2025, something different happened. Thousands of people across the country took to the streets in all 50 states, standing up against Trump’s authoritarian power grab and Elon Musk’s disturbing influence over the federal government.
And while Florida is often the place where political absurdity reigns, even here, people showed up to say “enough.” Protests in Tallahassee and Tampa saw crowds demanding an end to Trump’s Project 2025 and Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which critics say are blatant power grabs disguised as reform.
When a state famous for gator wrestling, hurricane parties, and headlines like “Florida Man Tries to Rob Bank with Live Iguana” decides something is too crazy—you know it’s a problem.
Project 2025 is Trump’s full-blown authoritarian blueprint, designed to fire thousands of career government workers, replace them with MAGA loyalists, and strip away checks and balances. Imagine Florida’s DeSantis-style rule—but nationalized and supercharged.
The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) is Elon Musk’s pet project, tasked with gutting federal programs, dismantling safeguards, and privatizing essential government functions. It started with USAID, but nothing is off-limits.
Protesters were driven by deep concern over the alarming trajectory of Trump’s second term. In just a short time, his administration has enacted a sweeping purge of career government employees, expanded executive power through Project 2025, attacked press freedoms, escalated crackdowns on immigration, and aggressively moved to roll back protections for LGBTQ+ individuals and reproductive rights. Adding to these concerns is Elon Musk’s unchecked influence over federal agencies, particularly his control of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which has already begun dismantling key government programs under the guise of “efficiency.”
With these authoritarian policies rapidly taking shape, protesters saw an urgent need to take to the streets before the damage becomes irreversible.
Florida’s Cities Took a Stand
While protests erupted nationwide, Florida saw major demonstrations in Tallahassee and Tampa.
In Tallahassee, hundreds gathered outside the old Florida Capitol to protest Trump’s attacks on immigrants and transgender rights, standing in solidarity with similar movements across the country.
In Tampa, protesters assembled in front of City Hall, calling out both Trump and Musk for their authoritarian ambitions.
While these were the largest confirmed protests in the state, Florida’s reputation as a battleground for political resistance means this is just the beginning. From Miami to Jacksonville, communities are mobilizing, organizing, and preparing for what comes next.
What Happens Now?
Protests are just step one. Florida has been a political battleground for decades, and the people here are gearing up to fight back. Voter registration efforts are ramping up, legal challenges are being prepared, and grassroots activism is only getting stronger.
One of the most important ways to fight back is by supporting grassroots candidates who are willing to stand up for democracy and the people, not corporate interests or authoritarian rule. Candidates like Gay Valimont and Howard Sapp for Congress, and many others, are fighting to ensure that Florida has real representation that puts working people first. Electing strong, principled leaders at every level of government is how we push back against these dangerous policies and protect our democracy.
Trump and Musk may think they can buy, bully, or bulldoze their way to power—but Florida has seen their kind before. And if these protests were any indication, they’re in for a fight.
